Scope of Work
The Fractional Chief Medical Officer will provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership on a part-time or as-needed basis. Responsibilities include overseeing key clinical functions, regulatory compliance, clinical quality and physician engagement to ensure high standards of care and operational efficiency.
Core Responsibilities
Clinical Quality Oversight
- Develop, implement, and monitor clinical quality improvement initiatives.
- Review clinical performance metrics and recommend strategies to enhance patient care outcomes.
- Lead efforts to ensure clinical excellence and patient safety.
Physician Credentialing and Engagement
- Oversee the credentialing and privileging process for medical staff.
- Facilitate onboarding of new physicians and provide guidance on clinical expectations.
- Foster collaboration and effective communication among medical staff.
Risk Management and Infection Control
- Identify, assess, and mitigate clinical risks within the organization.
- Oversee infection prevention and control programs to ensure compliance with current guidelines.
- Lead investigations and reporting for adverse events or sentinel events.
Regulatory Affairs and Survey Preparation
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including CMS and Joint Commission and DNV standards.
- Prepare the organization for accreditation and certification surveys.
- Act as the liaison with regulatory agencies during inspections or audits.
Medical Staff Affairs
- Serve as a key resource for the medical staff on clinical and administrative issues.
- Mediate conflicts and promote a cohesive working environment for physicians and healthcare teams.
- Chair or participate in medical staff meetings and committees as required.
Mergers and Acquisitions
- Provide guidance and support in aligning processes with merging institutions, medical staffs and regulatory affairs
- Facilitate the blending of cultures as separate entities unite
Divestitures / Bankruptcy and Crisis Management
- Deliver experience based best practice measures to accommodate the challenges of divestitures and/or managing bankruptcy processes
- Identify best path forward and develop actionable plans during crisis situations
Deliverables
- Scheduled Reports: Submit a report summarizing key activities, metrics, and recommendations on an agreed upon cadence.
- Quality Improvement Plan: Develop or enhance a clinical quality improvement plan.
- Credentialing Audits: Review and update physician credentialing files as needed.
- Regulatory Preparation Checklist: Provide actionable steps to meet regulatory requirements.
Time Commitment
- Weekly Availability: Weekly Availability: Starting at 2 to 5 hours weekly or as agreed upon up to full time engagements.
- Meetings: Attend scheduled meetings (e.g., board meetings, quality committees) virtually or in person, as necessary.
Performance Metrics
Success in this role will be evaluated based on targets negotiated, some examples include:
- Achievement of clinical quality improvement targets.
- Timely completion of regulatory and credentialing requirements.
- Feedback from the medical staff and leadership team.
- Overall organizational readiness for surveys and inspections.
